Robert C. Manske PT, DPT, M.Ed., SCS, ATC, CSCS
This opening address will discuss the topics of evidence-based medicine, practice and its implementation into rehabilitation. Evidence-based medicine is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making health care decisions. Evidence-based practice is the application of this concept to everyday clinical practice. The need for evidence-based practice will be encountered as well as a discussion of when evidence-based principles can be taken to extremes. Examples of evidence-based rehabilitation will be discussed including concepts on how to interpret and utilize evidence in our everyday practice of rehabilitation. Resources for searching for evidence will be discussed. Finally--are we missing out? Clinical reasoning in rehabilitation will be elaborated on during this session, as will what can be done when there is limited evidence available!
