Track 2

205 - Tendinopathies: Are We Treating Inflammation or a Degenerative Condition?

John O'Halloran MSPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS, Cert MDT

Rehabilitation professionals often encounter patients with the diagnosis of "tendonitis." This medical diagnosis can often bias the clinician to quickly assume that the pathological process leading to your patient's pain is inflammatory in nature. This session will explore the myths in the diagnosis of tendinopathies. The attendee will quickly learn that the majority of "tendonitis" diagnoses of the Achilles, patella, rotator cuff and elbow are not inflammatory and are actually a "tendonitis" which is a degenerative pathological process that requires a totally different therapeutic approach. This session will explain the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that cause the tendon injury. We will review the literature and define the proper terminology of a tendon injury. We will describe treatment methods and utilize case examples enhancing learning. The attendee will leave this lecture equipped with the most up-to-date information on how to recognize and treat this very common and often troublesome condition.
