406 - Understanding Sensory Processing for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

In this session, attendees will gain insight into the puzzling aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and learn sensory strategies targeting the needs of individuals with ASD. Concepts of sensory processing disorder (SPD) will be discussed in relation to its impact on motor coordination, language skills and social interactions of children with ASD. Current research will be reviewed in order to examine brain differences
between children with ASD and their neurotypical peers, and to determine effective sensory interventions. This session will also look at the challenges of engagement for children with ASD and the role
of occupational therapy in supporting participation in activities of daily living.
