Track 4
408 - Assimilating Therapeutic Practice Into Everyday Life
Michelle Lindsey PT, MBA, CPT
Approximately 80 percent of our nervous system is involved in processing sensory input. Our brains must locate, sort and order sensations to help us not only learn but also to assist us in forming perceptions and memories as well as creating relationships with both ourselves and the outside world. Our brains must give us the substance, energy and knowledge to direct our mind and body. If the brain is unable to perform its job of integrating these sensations into an adaptive response, this could interfere with the way we see, hear, smell and interpret the world. The intent of this session is to define and understand what are sensory integration and sensory integration disorders; use a systems model approach to treatment; and discuss how diet, lighting systems, color, sound, rhythm/music, vision, auditory stimuli and scents can help prevent and change disease processes (like ADHD), enhance movement, health and better overall communication.
