Track 2
209 - Neuromuscular Considerations in the Adolescent Throwing Athlete
Ross Brakeville PT, DPT, STC
Baseball is played by over 4.8 million 6- to17-year-olds a year. Unfortunately, the number of upper extremity injuries sustained by these athletes is high. A review of the literature on throwing mechanics demonstrates a potential flaw in how medical professionals, coaches and parents teach throwing technique. This flaw may be at the root cause of shoulder and elbow injuries. This course will provide the participant with valuable knowledge in biomechanics and pathomechanics of throwing along with rehabilitative issues for these athletes to include prevention. In addition, you will learn neuromuscular principles of throwing and be introduced to a new tool that will aid in comprehensive management of the throwing athlete.
