Speaker's Bio Testimonials

Due to the unique nature of Asperger's syndrome, an appropriate diagnosis is frequently not made until a child is an adolescent. By this time, well-intentioned diagnosticians have provided many different diagnostic labels such as ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Learning Disabled, Auditory Processing and Emotionally Handicapped. One study reported that of 32 children determined to have Asperger's syndrome, 92 percent were initially provided with other diagnoses or educational labels. An accurate diagnosis is highly impacted by the experience the diagnostician has with this population. Speech-Language Pathologists and other professionals benefit from knowing the diagnostic criteria and symptoms of the syndrome when searching for effective interventions.

This course is designed to educate participants about Asperger's Syndrome and provide practical skills for effective assessment and intervention. From Hans Asperger's first description of the syndrome to current views, participants will gain knowledge and insight into the strengths and weaknesses associated with this diagnosis. Attendees will be able to identify and obtain skills-based techniques designed to address the social-interaction, social-communication and social-emotional concerns present in this population. Significant attention will be paid to diagnostic criteria and treatment intervention with numerous opportunities for hands-on skills development. Extensive recommendations will be provided designed for specialists and classroom teachers to help these children succeed in the academic environment. Case studies and an appropriate amount of time for questions and answers will also be provided. Participants will take home useful tools and creative ideas to implement in their school or practice the very next day.
