It is estimated that up to 46 percent of nursing home residents display verbal aggression and up to 51 percent display physical aggression. Aggressive behavior is widely recognized as the most common behavioral precipitant to nursing home admissions and can take a devastating toll in terms of physical and emotional injury, personal and property damage and facility liability. Coupled with the fact that most facilities and caregivers are often ill equipped to effectively manage aggression, the problem can quickly reach critical mass with the emergence of even a singe serious case or incident. Typically, aggression is primarily addressed with powerful psychotropic medications which, while sometimes effective, carry significant risks when used with geriatric residents.

This one-day seminar will provide participants with non-pharmacological tools to address geriatric aggression in an informed, safe and effective manner. Research on aggression risk factors, a strategy for assessing and isolating the causes of aggression, techniques for monitoring behavior and selecting and carrying out behavioral interventions will be discussed. During this seminar, clinicians will gain skills to implement highly effective, low-cost, empirically informed interventions. These interventions are applicable to a wide variety of aggression-based resident and facility issues. Using a combination of lecture, discussion, entertaining anecdotes and case-based approaches, this program enables and empowers attendees to not only apply these strategies, but to also train others.

Cross Country Education is an approved provider by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the Association of Social Work Licensure Boards (ASWB) and the Tennessee Nurses Association -- this program is offered for 6 clock (contact) hours of continuing education credit. ANDREW HECK, Psy.D, ABPP, s an experienced seminar leader and clinician within the field of geriatric psychology. A Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Heck serves as the Director of Psychology and the Research Director at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville, Virginia -- one of only a handful of public, geriatric psychiatric hospitals in the nation. Dr. Heck is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and holds Clinical Assistant faculty appointments in the department of both Psychiatry and Gerontology at VCU.

In addition to his work at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital, Dr. Heck provides consultation, training and clinical services to assisted living and nursing facilities, both Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF) and Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF). He has testified as an expert witness on geriatric-forensic issues and has provided assistance to legal professionals regarding capacity and competency issues. Dr. Heck also has considerable knowledge of geriatric ethics, geropsychological assessment, differential diagnosis of dementia, behavioral treatment, severe mental illness in the elderly and the Recovery model in mental health that is currently sweeping the nation.
