Speaker's Bio Testimonials

Self-mutilation is increasing in today's society at an alarming rate. Self-mutilation is the intentional destruction of an individual's own body tissue. Due to the shame these individuals feel, it is often done secretly. Contrary to popular myth, self-mutilation rarely represents a suicide attempt. Typically, it is viewed by the individual as an act of self-nurturance and suicide prevention. Oftentimes, mental health practitioners are not knowledgeable about the etiology of self-mutilation, much less effective treatments to use with their client. In-depth knowledge of self-mutilation is crucial to achieving positive outcomes with these individuals and to put a stop to their compulsive tendency to injure themselves intentionally.

The purpose of this highly practical program is to provide participants with a comprehensive, research-based understanding of the causes of self-mutilation. Participants will learn which of their clients is most at risk and discover effective treatment and prevention strategies. To the extent that self-mutilation is often correlated with other serious psychiatric illness, most notably depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder, these conditions will be discussed as well. Attendees will return to their work setting armed with knowledge and tools they can immediately use to produce results with their clients.
