Clients seen by mental health professionals are often prescribed medication for their disorders. Conversely, they may not need medication, or perhaps are on the wrong medication. Therapists are often in closer contact with the client than the prescribing physician. However, the non-prescriber's knowledge of the drugs may be inadequate to effectively serve the client. Drug usefulness, drug selection, side effects and toxicities are all essential knowledge to allow you to most effectively serve your client.

This seminar will cover the medications most prescribed for persons with psychological disorders. This includes antidepressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotic medications—not only their pharmacology, but also their variety of uses, side effects and toxicities, allowing rational choice of medication for each particular client. This presentation will also cover the uniqueness of each drug, as well as the appropriate combinations of medications for use in difficult-to-treat clients.

Dr. Julien brings a unique sense of history to the presentation, showing how these drugs developed in progression, from the early days of psychopharmacology in the 1960s to the exciting developments in the 21st century. ROBERT M. JULIEN, MD, PhD, is both an anesthesiologist and psychopharmacologist, with over 30 years of experience. He received his PhD from the University of Washington in 1970 and his MD from the University of California at Irvine in 1977. Previously an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Anesthesiology at the Oregon Health Sciences University, Dr. Julien lectures widely on psychopharmacology. Dr. Julien firmly believes that non-prescribing mental health professionals need to understand the medications that their clients are taking or may need to take.

With over 30 years of continuous publication, Dr. Julien's book A Primer of Drug Action (Worth Publishers, 2007) is regarded as the definitive textbook of psychopharmacology, covering both psychotherapeutic agents as well as substances of abuse.
