The single most destructive element in life is anger. Anger destroys relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters, kids in school and adults in the workplace. Prolonged anger literally poisons our bodies. It leads to depression and violence. Virtually everyone needing psychological or psychiatric help is intensely angry with one or more people in their lives. Prisons are full of individuals who could not control their anger.

The single most valuable service therapists can provide their clients is to teach them anger control. Unfortunately, getting people to stop being angry is easier said than done. After months and years of therapy, many clients continue to be angry. Therapists are not immune to anger problems, either. We suffer from the same kinds of problems as clients. Therapists also have failing marriages, our children drive us crazy, we have difficulty getting along with parents and siblings and we have ongoing conflicts with our bosses. How can we help our clients when we don’t know how to solve our own problems?

The most effective and fun way ever devised for teaching anger control is Izzy Kalman's "game." Rather than having people "control" their anger by such devices as counting to 10 or deep breathing, this role-playing technique teaches people how not to get angry in the first place. It does this by taking advantage of the individual's overriding biological need to win. When people discover that anger makes them lose, and that there is an effortless way to win, they don't want to be angry any more. Mr. Kalman's "game" accomplishes in one session what is often missed in months and years of regular talking therapy. Through extensive use of role-playing, participants in this comprehensive seminar will learn to see anger in a whole new light. It will also give them a tool that can literally multiply their value and effectiveness as therapists.

ISRAEL C. KALMAN, M.S., is a nationally renowned instructor in anger control, bullying and relationship problems. He has a knack for seeing simple things that escape most people, and for coming up with simple solutions to seemingly intractable problems. Over two decades ago, he developed a fun yet powerful one-session technique for teaching anger control to both children and adults. He is the author and creator of the website Bullies2Buddies.com, which offers free online manuals that have been helping people throughout the world solve their bullying-related problems. He is also the author of a book for youth, Bullies to Buddies: How to turn your enemies into friends, a manual for teachers and parents called A Revolutionary Guide to Reducing Aggression Between Children, an audio CD program, How to Stop Being Teased and Bullied Without Really Trying, a whole-school bullying-reduction program (actually, a victim-reduction program), Victim-Proof Your School, and a soon-to-be-released DVD for workplace bullying called Turning Workplace Hostility into Harmony. Mr. Kalman has appeared on national television as an expert on bullying, spoken at numerous professional conferences in the U.S. and abroad and created a Staten Island Community TV series, Help, They're Driving Me Crazy.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at CCNY in New York in 1974 and a Master of Science degree in clinical psychology at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia in 1978, Mr. Kalman worked as a school psychologist and psychotherapist in Israel and then in New York City. During the past eight years, he has devoted himself full time to educating mental health professionals and educators. He is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, as well as a member of the International School Psychology Association, the New York State Association of School Psychologists, the Richmond County Psychological Association, and the International Society for Research on Aggression.
