Speaker's Bio Testimonials

When mental health professionals discuss ethics, many times the discussion evokes fear and paranoia. Practitioners frequently confuse law with ethics. Our professional organizations have written ethics and standards for the purpose of establishing guidelines for practice. These are not intended to be laws. "Ethics" is not about avoiding legal action; rather, it is about knowing and practicing within the expectations of our profession. Even though our disciplines are referred to as the "helping professions," we must remain mindful of the scope and limitations of practice. Our product is intangible in the sense that outcomes vary among customers, yet we are held accountable for those outcomes. We never know if a client is going to request our records or presence in a legal matter. This course will help sort out fact from fiction about the nature of ethics and their application in practice. Clinicians will gain an appreciation for the purpose and application of ethical standards, while learning to decrease risk in the practice.

  • Learn how your professional ethics are being construed as laws in malpractice actions
  • Learn how to protect your clients and yourself from "boundary" misinterpretations
  • Insure your clients' rights and protect yourself from "confidentiality" errors
  • Learn how poor communication of patient treatment plans and poor documentation can lead to bad outcomes
  • Practices to insure confidentiality and protect your client and yourself
  • How to avoid possible boundary violations
  • Discuss how to appropriately terminate therapy, without abandonment
  • Learn how to provide therapy based upon "clinical necessity"
