When mental health professionals discuss ethics, many times the discussion evokes fear and paranoia. Practitioners frequently confuse law with ethics. Our professional organizations have written ethics and standards for the purpose of establishing guidelines for practice. These are not intended to be laws. "Ethics" is not about avoiding legal action; rather, it is about knowing and practicing within the expectations of our profession. Even though our disciplines are referred to as the "helping professions," we must remain mindful of the scope and limitations of practice. Our product is intangible in the sense that outcomes vary among customers, yet we are held accountable for those outcomes. BRUCE J. SPENCER, PhD, M.A., LPCC, LMHC, LMSW, has 30 years of experience as a provider and administrator of inpatient and outpatient mental health and chemical dependency programs, including ten years of independent clinical practice. He has presented ethics seminars for 20 years and has written curricula for ethics and solution-focused treatment. Mr. Spencer is currently the Lead Utilization Review clinician for Fairfax psychiatric hospital in Kirkland, Washington. He has held the position of Senior Vice President of Care Management for a large medical group in Seattle, Washington, as well as having served as the State Executive Director for a national managed care company. Having earned a doctorate in psychology, he also has 10 years of experience as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology. He has made numerous appearances as a mental health expert on regional television, and has served as a consultant for program development. His regional acknowledgment as a speaker and author helps make him a very proficient and skilled seminar instructor.
