Meet Darlene S., APE Teacher

At Cross Country Education, we’re honored to work with the best of the best from across the nation who are dedicated to improving kids' lives every day! We take great pride in their shared passion for helping students succeed, and we love passing along their insight to inspire others interested in this rewarding field. This time, we’re spotlighting one of our outstanding adapted physical education (APE) teachers, Darlene S.

Here’s why Darlene decided to become an APE teacher, what she enjoys most about working with the Cross Country Education team and schools, and what advice she has for adapted PE teachers just embarking on their careers.

Why did you decide to become an APE teacher?

I first found out about adapted PE while working on my degree to become a general PE teacher. Before then, I didn't even know this wonderful field existed. I had to take an intro to APE course which consisted of hands-on field work. It was the hands-on experience I had there that really sparked my interest and altered my career goal. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. I absolutely love helping students enhance their PE skills and confidence to be more successful in school and in everyday physical activities.

What do you like about Cross Country Education?

The support from the office, the APE team, and our team lead is exceptional. It always feels like there is someone in your corner to help you when needed.

What have you liked about your experience working at CCE schools?

The ongoing support and the flexibility are what I've enjoyed most about my experience working with CCE.  I've had the freedom to create schedules that work for me that allow a good work-life balance.

What advice would you give to someone starting out as an APE teacher?

My advice would be to ask questions, always aim to learn more, and collaborate with other APE teachers. They are the best resources to grow in the field.
