It’s National Physical Education and Sport Week, and we’re proud to feature Lindsey W., an excellent adapted PE specialist!

As an adapted PE teacher, Lindsey develops and delivers individualized physical education instruction and services for her students, many of whom have exceptional physical needs due to motor developmental delays or other impairments. Through adapted physical education, she helps her students understand movement patterns and develop skills to participate in activities in and out of school – like going for a bike ride with the family! Kudos to Lindsey for improving her students’ lives at school and beyond! Here’s a snippet Lindsey shared about a recent success:

  • “During a student's IEP, Mom and Dad expressed that the student was having a hard time understanding the movement pattern when pedaling on his adult tricycle. He would get so frustrated. It was really hard because going for a bike ride is something he really wanted to do with the family. Mom and Dad were interested in getting any tools that would help him with the movement pattern.

  • We found foot pedals that he can place on the floor while he sits to really practice the peddling pattern, right left, right left. After some time practicing and working on mountain climbers during adapted PE sessions, he was able to participate in an enjoyable bike ride with his family!”

As Lindsey’s story shows, the role of adapted PE specialist is both challenging and rewarding! We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share successes from Lindsey and other adapted PE teachers we have the pleasure of working with, and we celebrate them during National Physical Education and Sport Week.
