As a school-based professional, you have a rare opportunity to help protect this generation of students. How? By actively promoting school safety. Whether you’re a school psychologist, nurse, social worker, administrator, teacher, or other school support professional, you know how critical it is for kids, families, teachers, and educational support staff to feel safe at school. You’re uniquely positioned to help.
You might be surprised to discover what a significant impact you can actually make. Get bold, take the lead, and turn to the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP ) school safety curriculum to PREPaRE for a crisis should one ever occur.
The NASP PREPaRE Crisis Curriculum for School Safety
The NASP created the PREPaRE curriculum to help schools strengthen their school safety, crisis management and emergency response team plans. The program developers are school-based professionals with firsthand experience and formal training, and the PREPaRE curriculum was based on research from both the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Homeland Security.
PREPaRE equips team members with the necessary skills to strengthen and improve your school’s safety, crisis management, and emergency response plans by focusing on the five stages of a crisis: prevention, mitigation, protection, response, and recovery.
PREPaRE encompasses the following hierarchical and sequential activities:
P — Prevent and PREPaRE for psychological trauma
R — Reaffirm physical health and perceptions of security and safety
E — Evaluate psychological trauma risk
P — Provide interventions
a — and
R — Respond to psychological needs
E — Examine the effectiveness of crisis prevention and intervention
